A field hockey star grapples with addiction in this riveting debut that will appeal to fans of Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak.

Stay out of trouble for one more year, and Katie Martin can leave her small town loneliness behind forever. She is a field hockey star on the fast track to a college scholarship, but her relationship with alcohol has always been a little questionable. Then trouble finds her. Alec is the most popular guy in school, and also the biggest bully—with his sights set firmly on Katie. When Alec turns on the charm, Katie thinks she must have been wrong about him.

Except that she wasn’t. On a rain-soaked, alcohol-drenched night, one impulsive decision leaves Katie indebted to Alec in the worst possible way. This debut novel is a fast-paced and compelling story of addiction, heartbreak, and redemption.

I haven’t read a book with a hockey player before, let alone a girl hockey player. And I want to find out what Katie has done and how Alec has helped her!

I really, really like this cover and have been dying to read it since I heard about it. I love contemporary and am so, so happy it’s making a comeback in YA! :)

    my WOW.

I saw this on someone’s WoW a few weeks ago and was immediately intrigued! I feel like field hockey is such an obscure high school sport, and I’m so curious what incident makes her indebted to Alec!  Plus…how is this going to end? Will they end up together?? so many questions!

    Great pick :)

This sounds unique and incredibly relevant. I hear a lot about alcohol addiction and drunk driving, especially in regard to teenagers and young adults, and I hope that this is a book that addresses the subject well. I agree- the field hockey element is pretty neat :-)

Great pick! I’ll add this to my TBR List now :-)

This one’s on my list too, I added it immediately after I read “it would appeal to fans of Laurie Halse Anderson…” =D

This one definitely sounds like it’ll be a good one.  Books involving addiction usually always make me cry because they can hit so close to home.  I’ll probably wait to read this one until people tell me I must read it asap.

I fell in love with this cover the first time I saw it. I’m glad to see so many YA books focus on serious issues like addiction and suicide. Great pick.

I kind of want to cry just from reading the description :( I haven’t read a girl hockey player! :) I’m trying to think if I have read one with a boy…I know I’ve read fanfiction with hockey players, lol.

That is the coolest cover I’ve seen in a while.

Random aside — anyone else notice how many Kate and Katie’s are the protags out there right now? Besides this I can think of the Goddess series by Aimee Carter AND Carrie Harris’s Bad Taste in Boys … I’m sure there are others, ha.
