Outlander Read-a-long

2012, Bookish Events, Features/Memes, Read-along

outlanderOutlander (Outlander #1) by Diana Gabaldon

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon–when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach–an “outlander”–in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into intrigues and dangers that may threaten her life…and shatter her heart. For here she meets James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, and becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Back in the spring of 2010—before I even started blogging—I bought a book that looked to be very popular. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon had been around for quite a while and I’m still not really sure what inspired me to buy it. It just called out to me, like a siren song. The blue cover and crown just ensnared me.

I will admit that the first 50 pages (first 2 chapters) or so did not completely hook me…but once she falls through those stones and back in time, I was unable to put it down! Just imagine being on holiday with your husband and accidentally thrusting yourself back in time 202 years! Into the middle of battle, no less! It was seriously unputdownable after that. I actually read the rest of the series in the upcoming months, back to back.

Outlander set

Probably my all time most favorite series, that’s my set of hardcovers. :) I also have the Kindle versions, for rereads, so these stay pristine.

And now I want to revisit this book with you guys. So, join us! You won’t regret it. :) AND! You’ll be able to finally say, “Outlander? Oh, yes! I’ve read that! I loved it!”

After a spontaneous Twitter conversation, the following six blogs decided to host this read-a-long. A special thanks to Jacinda (The Reading Housewives) for organizing the details and creating the fabulous graphic. :)

Pretty sure I’m down for this! I bought this book YEARS ago, because like you, I kept hearing people talking about it on Goodreads. Haven’t even touched it all these years!

I’ve meant to read these for years! I’ll have to see what my schedule is like closer to time, but maybe I should join in and read them (finally!)

THRILLED to be reading this along with you, Jess! That’s an impressive and beautiful library! Especially the special edition #1. AND to have the ebooks…it’s hilarious. Love that. That means this will be one heck of a book.  :)

Oh Jess, I love this series!  The funny thing is, I bought my copy of the first book for twenty-five cents at my library’s used bookstore. Who knew such awesomeness could be found so cheap?  Jamie and Claire are to die for.
