Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Audiobook Narrators

6th Nov 2012 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2012, Features/Memes, Top Ten Tuesday

I picked this topic because I get asked for audiobook recommendations from time to time. The reason the topic is narrator specific, and not audiobook specific, is because there are certain narrators who’ve read several books I loved.

This list only includes narrators I’ve listened to (obviously), so if you have favorites that you want to suggest, feel free to give their names/books in the comments section! Or if you just want to agree with some of mine, that too. :)

Each of their names will be linked to their page on Audible.com, where you’ll be able to see the books they’ve narrated.

1. Dan Bittner – Dan’s voice was once describe by Maggie Stiefvater as “sex on a stick.” I could not agree with her more. His most notable performances for me are those of Cole from Maggie’s Wolves of Mercy Falls series, and, my favorite, Adam of Where She Went by Gayle Forman.

2. Khristine Hvam – Ms. Hvam is one exceptional narrator. Her characterizations are to die for!! She never disappoints. Some of my favorites from here are Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa, Frostbite & Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead (don’t know why just those two :(), and Shade series by Jeri Smith-Ready.

3. Julia Whelan – Julia has narrated some popular books, like Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, but the ones I’ve listed to are The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson, and the Need series by Carrie Jones. Check out the many more books she’s narrated!

4. Nick Landrum – Nick reads books two through five of the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr. He is exceptional. Love him.

5. Elisabeth Rodgers – Elisabeth won me over with her characterization of the Georgina Kincaid/Succubus Blues series by Richelle Mead. She just captures the tone I imagined for the whole series, from characters to setting to plot.

6. Jim Frangione – Jim reads some of my favorite romance novels, including The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward, and the Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series by Lori Foster. I think he should read most romance novels in my opinion. :)

7. Jesse Eisenberg – Jesse hasn’t narrated many books, but he does narrate Holly Black’s White Cat series and he does it incredibly well. Love it!

thebodyfinder8. Caitlin Greer – Caitlin needs more narrating gigs because she is SUPER! I was really impressed with her work on What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell, and I really like her on the Hush, hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick.

9. James Langton – I’ve only listened to two books narrated by James, but I thought he was so good. He reads Sarah Rees Brennan’s Demon Lexicon series, except I don’t know if we’ll ever get the third book in the series on audio. :( That is a true tragedy. It does look like he has a big body of work though, and I bet they’re all just as great.

10. Eileen Stevens – I really love Eileen’s narrations on both The Body Finder series by Kimberly Derting and The Dark Divine series by Bree Despain. She also has a big body of work and I plan to get more books narrated by her soon. :)

This is actually a really useful list. I’ve given p on a few audiobooks (and therefore, to some extent, audiobooks in general) because I disliked the way they were being read. Thanks for sharing!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

You’re welcome! I hope you find someone you like in this list. :)

  2. Erin W

I haven’t listened to too many audiobooks, but I’m getting back into it and loving it. I must hear this Dan person since there’s a lot of praise about his voice.

  3. Amy @ bookgoonie

Daughter of Smoke & Bones was a first audiobook for me in a long time about a year ago. It won me over. There are some real gems out there. I must meet Mr Sex on a Stick.

I may have to tackle the BDB on audio to ever get to them.

  4. Tanya Patrice

I haven’t read that many narrators – probably Hvam is the only one I’ve listened to more than once – and totally agree that she is a fantastic narrator!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

Isn’t she?! I LOVE her! Hope you find some in this list to try out!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

OMG, I’ve listened to the text-to-speech on my Kindle too, and it makes me laugh every time, lol. You should totally try one from this list. :)

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

Yeah, they’re certainly not for everyone. I feel lucky to be one who does love them. If you ever feel up to trying one again, come back and check these names out. :)

  5. Carrie from Stalking the Bookshelves

Thanks for the post! I will definitely have to get my hands on a copy of Where She Went. I adore Adam so hard so I can’t wait to hear him come to life by an awesome narrator! I am listening to Monstrous Beauty right now and I’m really enjoying Katherine Kellgren’s interpretation.

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

Adaaaaam!! Yeah, I’m with you in the adoring department. I’ll have to add Monstrous Beauty to my list and check out Katherine’s other books. Thanks!

Oooh, I’m about to do Gone Girl on audio so it’s great to hear that the narrator is a favorite of yours. One of my favorites was the narrator of What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. The actress’s voice was pitch perfect for the character and on top of it all she really sounded like a teen! It enhanced my experience of the story for sure!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

I’ve listened to all but two Sarah Dessen books and that is one of them. I’m going to have to now and check it out! :D Thank you!

Dan Bittner- Hello. I totally agree!! I loved Cole but he made him better, also Where she Went. Sigh! I loved how listening to Daughter of Smoke and Bone- The narration of that novel was great. Jesse Eisenberg as Cassel! Perfection.

I would suggest to you- MacLeod Anderson- he narrates one part of Will Grayson, Will Grayson and Pushing the Limits. The second half of Will Grayson, Nick Podehl is also very good, he also does the Chaos Walking trilogy, I like his voice. I also really liked Laura Flanagan- she narrates the majority of Ellen Hopkins novels as well as The Running Dream.

Those are some of my favourite narrators.

    Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday

    Thanks for the list.

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

OMG! MacLeod almost made my list!! I think it’s awesome that we like a lot of the same narrators. :) And Nick Podehl was also really great as the other Will. I’m going to have to check out more books by both though, as well as Laura Flanagan. I think it’s awesome we like so many of the same narrators! :D

  8. Asheley (@BookwormAsheley)

Nick Podehl! His voice is like butter. Butter and money.

Also, this is possibly my favorite TTT post ever. I’m bookmarking!
Is this list order specific, or just ten thrown randomly together? This is important for me to know. Because I’m ME.

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

Hahah, this list is in no particular order..except for number 1 and 2, because they deserve those spots. I got to experience Nick in Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and I don’t know why I haven’t checked out more of his books! I’m going to make a note to myself to do so. :)

  9. Melissa

This is SO handy! So far my favorite narrators have been Scott Brick (The Passage), Jim Dale (Harry Potter), and the woman that does The Hunger Games but I can’t remember her name! I can’t wait to try out Mr. Sex on a Stick!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

I really enjoyed the narrator for The Hunger Games as well!! And I really want to try the HP audiobooks, I know people really love them. Thank you!!

  10. Tara

I’m still a newbie to the audiobook world and I am definitely going to keep these narrators in mind! Jim Dale sort of ruined it for me with his amazing voices for Harry Potter so I’m looking forward to listening to some of your recs :)

  11. elena

i have not yet listened to an audiobook so i will definitely keep this list in mind!! also hmmm to dan’s voice, INTERESTING.

  12. Ruby

YES! Jesse Eisenberg does a fantastic job with Cassel in the Curse Workers trilogy!

I also really, really like Bahni Turpin, who narrates the Chess Putnam/Downside Ghosts books by Stacia Kane. She’s fantastic, and I think she’s done a few other things. Anna Fields, who narrated most of Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ books until she died (Anna Fields, not SEP) was a fantastic narrator as well.

  13. Mainframeguy

I came here looking to find out who was the narrator on “starter for Ten” by David Nichols – but after that it gets complicated! I may blog on this matter soon, but not whilst mid search!

Suffice to say I am adding you to my blogroll – impressed by this site.

However confused that it came up in my search and then I could not find any reference to “starter for Ten” by David Nicholls in the post!
