I went to ALA Midwinter and came home with quite a few books, all of which I’m excited for. But as I added them to Goodreads, I noticed that a lot of them didn’t have a lot of adds. I wanted to spotlight some of those to bring them to your attention in case you haven’t heard about them. Most of the featured books have less than 200 adds, with a couple that have about 300…definitely all under 400 though. I will have a post from now until Friday showcasing them, so check back each day! Here we go. :)

As the chilling suspense builds, Michael realizes that the house and its grounds harbor many more secrets-both dead and alive.

Zach is riding the Greyhound bus through a snowstorm to visit his older brother Derek, whom he hasn’t seen in seven months. That’s when their parents finally went broke paying Derek’s doctor’s bills and had to give him up as a ward of the state. Nothing—not drawing in his sketchbook, not basketball—lets Zach forget that his brother is living in a mental institution five states away. But surprisingly, sitting next to a talkative teenage girl he nicknames Purplehead starts to take the edge off Zach’s pain.
Prompted by a chain of unpredictable events and by the people he meets along the way, Zach’s cynical humor gives us a poignant look at medical insurance and health care systems for the mentally ill, and at the everyday fears, joys, and revelations of adolescence.

David Ellison dreams of acting at Juilliard, but he’s expected to attend nearby Stanford University, just like all of his classmates at hard-driving Oak Fields Prep. As if wasting his private school education weren’t enough, David is also on track to destroy his relationship with his girlfriend, Ellen, when he finds himself falling for his new co-star, Vanessa.
With David’s Juilliard audition approaching, and his relationship teetering on the brink of disaster, Oak Fields is thrown into chaos as a mysterious prankster begins attacking the school’s highest achievers, determined to sabotage their college aspirations. Anyone who excels is a potential target, and David, the star of every play, could be next.
From the author of the highly praised The Brothers Torres comes a dangerously insightful book about enduring the pressures of high school, surviving the ins and outs of love, and fighting for your dreams, no matter what.

A lyrical novel about family and friendship from critically acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Jess @ Gone with the Words
I KNOW!! The cover AND the synopsis scares me…Halloween read? Maybe! :D
Ginger @ GReads!
I know I’ve told you this before, but I have to say it again.. I think this idea of showcasing a few *not so popular* books from ALA each day is the best idea EVER! I did not see Riding Out the Storm there, but reading this synopsis has made me want to check it out. I also picked up a copy of Lucky Fools b/c I think it sounds great!
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Thanks for being there yesterday to hear my reasoning. You and Lena both are awesome. :)
Tara
I hadn’t heard of of any of these books before! I think it’s great that you’re doing this, as it’s quite often the bigger books that get all the love.
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Thank you! This is exactly why I wanted to do this. :)
Molli
Added The Dead of Winter! It sounds FAB!
Jess @ Gone with the Words
It does, doesn’t it?! Creepy…

I haven’t heard of any of these either! The new Saenz book sounds good. His book, “Last Night I Sang to The Monster” is one of my favorites.
Jess @ Gone with the Words
I hadn’t heard of this author before but the synopsis of this book really caught my attention!
Christa (Hooked on Books)
This is a great idea for a feature. I love the sound of Riding Out the Storm – definitely adding that one to my to-read list.
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Me too!! I first noticed the cover because, hey, it’s a guy and there’s snow falling and he looks…intriguing…it’s eye catching! But after reading the synopsis it definitely had my attention!
Shannon P.
I really love that you’re doing this because I also like showcasing smaller, lesser known titles. I’ve heard of Riding Out the Storm and The Dead of Winter before but not the other two. Can’t wait to see which other titles you feature this week :D
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Yes! They sounds really good! I’m excited to show you guys the rest! :D
April Books & Wine
Lucky Fools looks right up my alley!

Jess @ Gone with the Words
Thank you!! I’m glad you guys like this feature!! :D

Benjamin Alire Saenz is fantastic–I loved his Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood. Last Night I Sang to the Monster has a lot of appeal, too.
Jess @ Gone with the Words
See, I hadn’t heard about this author at all! I’m glad to hear his other books are good, because I plan to look them up. :) Thanks!!
forloveandbooks
These all look awesome!! I especially like the sound of “Buried” it will DEFINITELY be on my TBR list!!
Jac @ For Love and Books
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Buried does sound really intriguing!! I’m glad it caught your eye! :D
SaraO @ TheLibrarianReads
Loving this feature as I was stuck in FL while everyone else seemed to ship off to ALA! I’m entertaining the first book about the goth-crime solver. Liking the unique personality of the narrator. Also, The Dead of Winter. Thinking it might be a really cool horror (like the poisoned house) if it’s good.
Jess @ Gone with the Words
I like that the narrator’s a different type of protagonist in Buried too! And Dead of Winter sounds totally creepy! :)
Logan Turner
I’m really drawn to Buried. Just added to my GR list!
Jess @ Gone with the Words
Logannnn! I’m drawn to Buried myself…I want to read more about this Goth girl and the smoking-hot musician named Phillipe! ;)
Bookgoonie
Great books. I only had one of those books. I can’t wait to see what you think. I want all of them…but I can do without Aristotle. It rocks he tutored Alexander the Great, but gag me with a spoon.
Bookgoonie
Ok. I amend my previous comment. Aristotle & Dante’s adventure in friendship actually does sound good. Poop. Now I might want that one to. I covet my neighbor’s donkey or Jess’s great taste in books.
Cialina
I love this feature! Lucky Fools sounds like a good book. :)
Ari
I don’t know where you find all these books, but in every list you have I find something that I think I might like.
Thanks for sharing!
Jacinda @ The Reading Housewives
Jess…you are awesome! I’m going to go through all of these posts and add books to my TBR!
Ljscheer
Thanks for including my upcoming THE SEER spinoff, BURIED.
It’s already gotten good Kirkus and VOYA reviews and when I get my author copies I’ll offer some on the YALSA list. Librarians are some of my best friends (g).
