On the day Liz Emerson tries to die, they had reviewed Newton’s laws of motion in physics class. Then, after school, she put them into practice by running her Mercedes off the road.

Why? Why did Liz Emerson decide that the world would be better off without her? Why did she give up? Vividly told by an unexpected and surprising narrator, this heartbreaking and nonlinear novel pieces together the short and devastating life of Meridian High’s most popular junior girl. Mass, acceleration, momentum, force—Liz didn’t understand it in physics, and even as her Mercedes hurtles toward the tree, she doesn’t understand it now. How do we impact one another? How do our actions reverberate? What does it mean to be a friend? To love someone? To be a daughter? Or a mother? Is life truly more than cause and effect? Amy Zhang’s haunting and universal story will appeal to fans of Lauren Oliver, Gayle Forman, and Jay Asher.

HAPPY TUESDAY!! Every wonder what a day in the life of an author is like? Amy Zhang is here to educate you on just that. Thank you, Amy!

A Day In The Life

This is a simple break down of your day. You can do it by listing it off by hour, half hour, minute…jump around! Feel free to make it as long as you like, but try to go from getting out of bed to getting back in – even if you have to leave gaps open in it…

8 AM: wake up. Check email. Groan. Tell myself that I can sleep for another five minutes.

9 AM: “Well, crap. That wasn’t five minutes.” Briefly consider sleeping for another five minutes. Check email again. Check Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. Play a little 2048 to “wake my brain up.”

9:30 AM: drag myself out of bed, go downstairs to make tea and toast. Trudge back to my room, look over what I wrote yesterday. Head, meet desk. Mutter variations of, “Oh, God, this is all terrible, I should delete this whole thing, I should quit.” Bemoan existence.

10 AM: “I should check Tumblr again.” Check Tumblr. Check email. Check Instagram. Check Twitter. Check Facebook. Spend an ungodly amount of time on Pinterest.

11 AM: Is it time for lunch yet? No? Whatever, second breakfast then. Go downstairs, make tea, toast a bagel. Realize that I don’t actually like bagels. Drag myself back upstairs with a pack of crackers that I will probably decide I don’t want as soon as I get to the top of the stairs.

12 PM: I might actually be awake now. Time for actual work. Check college email. Sees a new survey, consider doing it, but ultimately convince myself that I’ll do it tomorrow (hahaha LIES). Check various other emails. Post a picture to Instagram, along with a quote from Falling Into Place for #100daysofFiP. Look at clock. Freak out—how the heck has it been an hour already?

1 PM: Settle down to write. Unlock phone to disable wi-fi and open my No Distraction app, but I’ll inevitably get distracted before I get that far. Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. Ooooh, new items on Modcloth! Hunter boots on sale! Daily poor financial decision—check.

2 PM: “OH GOD I NEED TO WRITE THIS BOOK.”

3 PM: “OH GOD HOW HAVE I STILL NOT STARTED WRITING?”

4 PM: Get a text. Response: “No, I’m not busy! Let’s go get coffee/go to the beach/make more poor decisions!

6 PM: “HOLY CRAP WHERE DID THE DAY GO?” Hurriedly play piano, eat dinner. Keep an eye on the clock. Cry.

7 PM: Finally coax myself into my writing arrangement: Write-or-Die for 750 words per 30 minutes, one Ghirardelli sea salt & almond Mini per 1,000 words, bathroom breaks per 2,000. Wi-fi is disabled, concentration app is on. Writing finally commences.

12 AM: Untangle self from chair, stumble to the bathroom. Shower, get into bed. Grab laptop. “Oh, sure, I have enough time for another thousand words.”

1 AM: “Huh, that went pretty fast. I’m on a roll! This book is going to be fantastic! I’m brilliant!”

2 AM: document word count for the day. Pass out.
