When her best guy friend falls victim to a vicious hate crime, sixteen-year-old Cat sets out to discover who in her small town did it. Richly atmospheric, this daring mystery mines the secrets of a tightly knit Southern community and examines the strength of will it takes to go against everyone you know in the name of justice.

Against a backdrop of poverty, clannishness, drugs, and intolerance, Myracle has crafted a harrowing coming-of-age tale couched in a deeply intelligent mystery. Smart, fearless, and compassionate, this is an unforgettable work from a beloved author.

Happy Music Monday! This is a weekly feature hosted here at Gone with the Words where I post a video of a song that reminds me of something or someone I’ve read, anything that relates to it in my mind. I’d love to know what songs remind you of certain books or character. Create a post and leave the link or just tell me about them in the comments!!

Shine by Lauren Myracle is going in my favorites list for this year. It deals with some heavy stuff, but one prominent issue is drugs. Read more about Shine in my spoiler-free review HERE. You don’t want to pass this book up!As you may know by now, I love Jimmy Eat World. The album Futures is one of my all-time favorites. It’s really all about drugs, pain and loss and it’s why I thought this song would be perfect for this book. The song is Pain.

I don’t feel the way I’ve ever felt.
I know.
I’m gonna smile and not get worried.
I try but it shows.

Anyone can make what I have built.
And better now
Anyone can find the same white pills.
It takes my pain away.

I never thought I’d walk away from you.
I did.
But it’s a false sense of accomplishment.
Every time I quit

Anyone can see my every flaw.
It isn’t hard.
Anyone can say they’re above this all.
It takes my pain away.

Great song choice! I'll shamefully admit I have never actually heard any of their songs before *hides* but I am definitely going to be checking more out now! Great lyrics and it's fitting for the novel, given what I know about it. I really want to read Shine!
