Curses and cons.
Magic and the mob.

In Cassel Sharpe's world, they go together. Cassel always thought he was an ordinary guy, until he realized his memories were being manipulated by his brothers. Now he knows the truth — he’s the most powerful curse worker around. A touch of his hand can transform anything — or anyone — into something else.

That was how Lila, the girl he loved, became a white cat. Cassel was tricked into thinking he killed her, when actually he tried to save her. Now that she’s human again, he should be overjoyed. Trouble is, Lila’s been cursed to love him, a little gift from his emotion-worker mom. And if Lila’s love is as phony as Cassel’s made-up memories, then he can’t believe anything she says or does.

When Cassel’s oldest brother is murdered, the Feds recruit Cassel to help make sense of the only clue — crime-scene images of a woman in red gloves. But the mob is after Cassel too — they know how valuable he could be to them. Cassel is going to have to stay one step ahead of both sides just to survive. But where can he turn when he can’t trust anyone — least of all, himself?

Love is a curse and the con is the only answer in a game too dangerous to lose.

Every time I visit Cassel Sharpe, my heart breaks for him. When will our boy get a happy ending, Holly Black?! I hope it finally happens in Black Heart because he needs one after everything you’ve made him go through so far!

Cassel is one of those people who would rather see the people he loves happy, rather than be happy himself. His self-sacrificing breaks my heart at times. Even when he’s dealing with his twisted, selfish brothers, he’s doing it because he wants them to be happy in the end. Of course, for one of the brothers it’s impossible now, but more on him in a bit. I hate how some of the people in Cassel’s life only want to use him and how his friends, deep-down, distrust him a little. I want to jump in the book and defend Cassel! I feel like no one’s on his side sometimes! I don’t know why I feel he’s treated so unjustly, I mean, the boy can take care of himself…but who’s taking care of his heart? Cassel gets hurt a lot, and he covers it up so well. My heart breaks for him, I tell you!!

I really liked Lila in this book. I believe she loves Cassel, cursed or not, so I can’t wait to see how everything turns out in Black Heart. Sam and Daneca are as interesting as ever. Sam funny and quirky, and Daneca…Daneca’s secret surprised me!

Out of all of Cassel’s family members, the only one I like is his grandfather. His mother is just selfish and annoying, and his brothers are horrible. I wanted to smack his mom and punch Baron…again! I was most shocked that Philip was found murdered in this book. I didn’t like him, but I didn’t think Holly Black would kill him!! I’m still expecting this to turn out to be another con. It’s weird, but I really can’t believe he’s truly dead.

The world Holly Black has created in this Curse Workers series is just incredible. I love the cons, the mobster families, the worker’s abilities…it’s all so dark and mysterious!

This audiobook series is narrated by Jesse Eisenberg. Yes, he’s THAT guy. The Oscar nominated actor of The Social Network, Zombieland, Adventureland, and many others. He reads this series beautifully!! His narration brings out so many emotions that I may not have felt if I had actually read this book from print. If you’re looking for a series to listen to, I strongly suggest this one.

Great review! I reviewed this one recently too. I hope Cassel gets his happy ending as well, I feel protective of his character whenever I read this series. I also agree that I think Lila really does love Cassel no matter what she says.

It seems  like every time I read one of your reviews I am always smiling at how passionate you are and how awesome it is that you are able to put that first and foremost into your thoughts about the book. I have not read this series, but after your audio recommendation I will be checking it out as my next book.

Oh no, no happy ending in this either!? :( I just listened to White Cat on audiobook a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Haven’t gotten into this one yet. Great review. I’ll be getting to it soon :)

I bought this one recently and I’m looking forward to reading it even more, I’ve heard it’s even better than the first one. I loooved Cassel in White Cat but was not a fan of his brothers either. I’m hoping to like Lila better in this one, and the mother .. grrr.. I can already imagine that I’ll hate her too.

Well, I might have to get the audio book, now.  This series is an obsession of mine.  Not enough people are reading it!!

Oh! My sister loves this series, actually she is a really big Holly Black fan, and keeps telling me that I have to read it!  Seems like you agree.

But I’m a HEA girl. How will I be able to stand the heartbreak for Cassel? Maybe I’ll wait until the last book is out.

I really enjoyed this one and like you, I’m rooting for Cassel to get a happy ending! I need that boy to be [email protected]:disqusOr at least at a better point in his life, cause right now it pretty much sucks.
I was also surprised by Philip’s murder! But I didn’t really like him either…
    Can’t wait for Black Heart!

I read an ARC copy of this before it came out. I need to go back and listen to the audio because I loved the audio for the first one. Jesse Eisenberg is awesome.

Not gonna lie, I keep circling around Holly Black and I never have time to read her awesome books. One day I will get to this, but I’m glad to hear this book is amazing. Thanks for the review and happy Friday!

Wow, Jesse Eisenberg would be a great reader for this. I loved this book too. I’m such a big Cassel fan. Daneca’s secret really shocked me too.
