Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals For 2013

Ha! I was really trying to get out of making this list, y’all, I really was. Mostly because I was being lazy. But the truth is, I need to make this list whether I want to or not because it is important to set goals for myself. Though I don’t know if I can come up with a whole ten…

1. Read more books from my shelves…

– Yeah, this is a must.

2. Complete reading series that have ended.

– This is an extension of #1. Cheating a little, ha!

3. Purchase even less books this year than last year until I have made a significant dent in my shelves.

– This does not apply to books in a series because I just can’t.

4. Try to make it out to even more author events.

5. While at these author events, get to know even more blogger from my lovely city.

– I  know they’re there! :)

6. I will not request ARCs and limit my egalley requests to ones I’m dying to read.

– That’s it! I said it! I’m sure I’ll still be getting unsolicited ones in the mail, and I’m happy about them, but I won’t actively request any.

7. Read more of what I want to read, when I want to read it.

– In other words, I don’t want to follow release schedules or tours or put deadlines on myself. I want to take the pressure of keeping up away this year. I’m getting back to blogging for me this year.

What will your bookish goals be for this year?

Great goals! I want to read more books I own too. I didn’t think about author events but that’s a great resolution! I might have to keep it in mind.

Author events are always fun so I need to follow through on that one for sure! And you should too! :D

  2. Cait

OMG You have so many *books* haha. I can definitely see why you want to read more from your shelves…I reckon that will be on every bloggers list today! Good luck with your goals Jess. Glad to see no.2 on there *cough*The Demon’s Surrender*cough* ;)

  3. Ginger @ GReads!

This sounds like a very less stress Jess :) haha I totally made that rhyme. But seriously, I support your goals and will be glad to share my books with you if that keeps you from purchasing more ;) hehe

Very less stress Jess is EXACTLY what I’m going for!! And thank you for making a rhyme for me!! :D

  4. Jessica

I love your goal of reading what you really want to read. I waste so much time reading books I really don’t enjoy. Great goals :)

Thanks, Jessica!! I just need to do that. And not make myself stress about deadlines. :)

Good goals all around! I think the last one is the most important one for me. You get burned out if you’re not reading the books you want to read and just focusing on requests. So I’ll be reading a mix of everything, but mostly the ones I want. :)

EXACTLY!! I don’t want to have to think about deadlines and such.

  6. Elizabeth

I have a lot of the same ones, especially to read the books I already own. I didn’t use the last one on your list for myself, but I think it’s a really good one to follow. Great list!

  7. Shelley

I have similar goals, but mine involve not my print books (though I have a lot of those to read) but my Kindle. :D I download waaaaay too many free books that I just can’t keep up and 80% of my “to read” list is stuff on there. So until I get my Kindle under control, no more free ebooks. :D

  8. Magan

Love you! Love your goals! <3 And I especially love this part "I’m getting back to blogging for me this year." — it has to be fun and you have to read what you want! xo

I LOVE YOU TOO MAGAN!!! :D Yeah, it was time to get back to basics. :)

  9. Janita @ Book, Interrupted

Great list! Ugh bookcases. Luv em. They’re so fun to organize (and fill with awesome books). Feel free to check out my blog to see my bookish goals. They are slightly random and long-winded.

  10. Jessica

I nodded at every one of these goals. :) And I must say that I love your header and your book shelves! *wipes away drool*

Thanks, Lauren!! I really love the bookshelves too. I was BEYOND giddy when I first got them. And I really hope we both stick to our goals about blogging for us first. :)

  11. Jenni Elyse

7 is a big goal for me too. I was in a serious reading slump last year and I think it’s because I got to bogged down with reading what I “had” to read because of new releases, book club, church, etc. I want to read what I want when I want and I think that will help me with my slump.

Good luck with all your goals! :D

Exactly!! All those things make it a chore instead of the fun hobby that it is. Good luck to you too!!

  12. Amy @ DJ Librarian Dishes

Amen to getting back to blogging for yourself! Pressure can definitely take away from the enjoyment of a book, so having as little pressure as possible is best. :) Also, your number 1 is on my list, too, since my bookshelves need some serious love. Good luck with your goals this year, Jess! :)

Thanks, Amy!! I see a lot of us have the same issu: too many books, so little time! But like you say, our shelves deserve our love! :D

  13. Kristilyn (Reading in Winter)

I think there are a lot of people who want to read more books that they own … that’s definitely one of my goals! It’s been too easy to hoard ALL THE BOOKS and not read very many of them. I’ll be sure to get to that this year! :)

Good luck with all your goals!

    • Jess @ Gone with the Words

I have this fear I’ll one day be on an episode of Hoarders if this continues… hahaha

  14. Bookworm Brandee

Wow! These are wonderful goals…a few of which I may make my own! :) I was so happy to see that I’m not the only one with shelves(!) full of TBR books! :)So I definitely need to read more books I own. Thanks for sharing.

I’m seeing there’s a lot of us with the same issue! Not a completely bad issue to have though! :)

  15. Molli

Jess. GREAT goals, chica. Your resolutions are, well, mostly like mine! 2012 seems to be a year when a lot of us just got over-whelmed, and put too much pressure on ourselves. It seems like a lot of us are focusing on getting back to basics. :)

There’s just so much I feel I’m missing out on by trying to stay on top of all these new releases. :( I feel good about this decision. :)

  16. Lisa @ Bookshelf Fantasies

Great goals! I also intend to get through more of the books on my shelves instead of always looking for new ones! And absolutely – reading for pleasure instead of reading for deadlines. Good luck!
