Outlander Read Along: Chapters 8–14 Answers

Other Bookish Posts

Week two has come to a close! I love everyone’s enthusiasm about the end of chapter 14, to the point where you went ahead and read the next chapter. LOL, that was AWESOME! And kudos to those of you who resisted *cough*Heidi*cough* :) I’ve loved hearing everyone’s thoughts on twitter (continue to use hashtag #OutlanderRA so we can all see!). Here are my answers to Carrie’s great questions for this week!!

1.  Claire has been given the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)?

I’m sad to report that I use no home remedies for anything. I am a slave to modern medicine, I’m afraid. Sad, I know.

EDIT: I just remembered….my dad told me to take a shot of tequila when I have a sore throat. O.0 I don’t use this method, lol.

2. What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (Clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)

OMG! Definitely plumbing. I need a toilet! And a shower! I could live with not bathing for a couple of days, but when it came time to, I’d want a shower, dammit!

3. Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.

I actually love all of chapter 14. I especially love how much care Jamie takes in making this as special for Claire even though he knows she doesn’t want to go through with it. I fell completely in love with him in this chapter.

4. What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love?

I loved that! And I would not be hesitant to try this at my own wedding…though the cutting of my wrist completely terrifies me, lol. I’m a weenie. Maybe I’d just say the vows that go along with it, because they were lovely.

5. Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind?

I am following the schedule!! But this is a reread for me, so I am able to restrain myself. Had this been my first time reading it, I’m sure I would have finished the whole book by now, haha.

Now go on over to Tangled Up in Blue to get the questions for chapters 15-21 and to link up this week’s answers!!

I agree with you on the cutting the wrist thing! I have a fear of pain, and I would never agree to do it ahead of time! If someone surprised me and did it? Weeeeelll… okay, I don’t have too much of a problem lol. What weenies we are! :P

  2. Bookgoonie

I use a good stiff margarita (I don’t buy the good stuff, so no straight shooting for me) when I’m sick. Better than nyquil. Chapter 14 rocked my socks off. Everything Jamie did & said was so swoon-worthy. I was all like “where is a Stonehenge for me to fall through.”

I did hunt down book 2 @ HPB yesterday, because this chick will continue the saga.

  3. Kristilyn Robertson

I agree … if this wasn’t my second time reading it, I’m sure I would’ve been done by now! (Jacinda, are you reading this? :)) Chapter 14 was pretty amazing. I loved it! Even though I knew what was going to happen. And I love how Jamie made it special for Claire, even though she didn’t want to go through with it. We need more Jamies in the world, dammit!

I’d love to see more Jamie’s around! Maybe we need to move to Scotland. :)

  4. Carrie Knudson

A shot of tequila is a cure for anything. lol I think we all are on the same page when it comes to hygiene.

  5. Book Nympho

I completely agree on the shower!  Even if there was water and the ability to bathe, I don’t like taking baths and never feel as clean as when I’ve been rinsed by a shower.  And even if it was safe, I don’t think I’d like to cut my wrist either.  Seems painful…what happened to just nicking your finger and doing it that way? :)

    • Jess

OMG, I am so not a bath person. I need showers!! lol Glad I’m not alone. :)

I ADORED chapter 14 beyond words. I was like Jamie, you’re kinda cool throughout but the moment when he is consoling her after she fainted. Cripes. I almost fainted myself! Also when he gave her the pearls…AHH love him!! I totally read ahead through chapter 15 and I am NOT ASHAMED!

    • Jess

I LOVE when he gave her the pearls!! And if I hadn’t already read it once before, I would have totally read CH 15 too, lol. :)

;alskdjflksdjf  How much do I love that you love Chapter 14 too?  As I said on Twitter, I fell for it a lot harder than 15.  14 was so emotional to me, whereas 15 was more physical.  I love all of the consideration he gives her, and that even though they’re not in love, they obviously care for each other, and there is such a foundation for love.  This was when I fell for him myself.  I feel like before this chapter, we really didn’t know much about Jamie that we didn’t gather from hearsay or Dougal.  I love that he’s exactly and nothing like his reputation at the same time.

    YES, showers are a MUST!

Jamie is such a stinking sweetie :)

I think I’m the only one who as completed the whole book already…

    • Jess

TEQUILA! *dances around* I so love that you could not put this book down. This is why we’re friends. :)

I agree about the blood bond. The words were lovely and the idea is romantic. But it would be quite terrifying in practice. It was probably better that Claire didn’t have to think about it ahead of time. And I love what you said about chapter 14. The way that Jamie cares for Claire – even when he knows that she is just marrying him to keep herself safe.

Ok, I’m late on the commenting b/c of contemporary month and for that I am sorry.

Chapter 14 is so great. I was telling another reader that I think it is probably just as good as Chapter 15 but to say that it has GOOD STUFF is doing it a disgrace. I agree with what you say about Jamie making it special for Claire – particularly when it was obvious that he was nervous too – and it was during this chapter that I could see even more that she was “noticing” him. I think it mentioned that they noticed how nice they looked to each other. The pearls, the Gaelic vows, Jamie wanting to wear his traditional kilt, him tending to her privately, THE NAME (dear gracious, I pass out) – those things just  made Chapter 14 stand out to me too. I just can’t call it GOOD STUFF because that seems almost raunchy where it should be tender and sweet. Now, Chapter 15 I will call GOOD STUFF. A duck is a duck, ya know?

    • Jess

Don’t be sorry! We get a whole week to read and comment! :D

Maybe we can say Chapter 14 had the GREAT STUFF! :D And all the things you just mentioned about that chapter made me want to reread it, lol. I was swooning over here!
