Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

4 Stars

So I was on twitter, and my friend Sarah (Storybound Girl) was tweeting some lines from Mindy Kaling’s show The Mindy Project. Of course, I retweeted them because they were FUNNY! I love that show. Then she asked if I’d read her book and if I hadn’t, to check out the audiobook because it was GOOD. So, OF COURSE, I listened!

Mindy Kaling’s autobiography is incredibly easy to relate to. If by the end you don’t feel like you’ve made a new friend, we probably won’t be friends. Her self-deprecating stories are endearing. Even the stories where she’s telling you about her successes are endearing. They don’t come off as snobby or showboaty. I’m telling you…you’re going to fall in (or more in) love with this woman. I loved that she talks about other actors I know. Kind of like getting first-hand true stories about them. I laughed so many times while listening to this. Sometimes while working and it totally got me weird looks, lol. I don’t care.

Audiobook Notes

This audiobook is narrated by Mindy herself and she does such a great job. Only she could’ve narrated this and infused her comedy in just the right places. The audiobook is only 4 hours and 37 minutes long, so if you’re looking for a fast, fun listen… I must warn you though, there is a section toward the end that is not beneficial for those of us listening to the book. Even Mindy points this out. There’s a section where there are photographs instead of narrative…so yeah, I kind of need to find the book at my library or leaf through it at a bookstore to see them, because duh. Other than that, FANTASTIC audiobook! :)

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck – impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door – not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

What Some Friends Had to Say About It…

Liz @ Elizziebooks – “Within the first five minutes, I was laughing my butt off.

Kristilyn @ Reading in Winter – “It was fun, humorous, and a great read.

Kelly @ The Broke and the Bookish – “The overall tone is very casual, as if you are just talking to a friend.

I have this audiobook but I CANNOT listen to an audiobook without the print copy or Kindle copy either in my hand or beside me on the counter while I cook or clean. It’s a quirk BUT it also helps me in those rare instances like at the end of this book when you need to be able to see. There was a period of time in the Tina Fey audiobook like that – a period of time in the audio that was neat and in the print copy that was neat – but reading them together, I got the best of both worlds. Not sure why I’m telling you this except to say that this is on my list and I’m waiting for my turn for the print library copy to read along with it! I’ve heard it is hysterical and I can’t wait. :)

So I’ve actually never watched The Mindy Project and I haven’t picked up the book… but now I really want to! I’m always up for some good humour and self-deprecating tones are so good if done well. Plus, it’s only 4.5 hours? I can definitely manage that! :) Thanks for the great review, Jess!

I LOVE her in The Office, I really need to check out her new show. Just wish I had more time for tv. I’m going to see if my library has this audiobook, I love self deprecating stories. =)

Ooh, I love the Mindy Project, and I’m always up for a laugh, so I think I might have to check this one out. I’m going to plump for the physical version, though, because even though I can just imagine Mindy reading her own book, it would drive me nuts to miss the pictures!

I’ve been wanting to read this because Mindy is just so funny! Her show usually has me in stitches laughing, so I can only imagine how her book–both print and audio–will make giggle. Great review!

I LOVED her on The Office so now I think I might need to read this book. I’m not the biggest fan of audiobooks (of the 8 I’ve tried, I have finished none) but I’d also like to see the pics!

Thanks for linking to my review! :) I really loved this book … but I totally love Mindy anyway, so I was a little biased. She’s just so funny and so easy to relate to! I’m happy you enjoyed it. too!
