The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

4 Stars

It was very exciting for me to find out that Julie Kagawa would be continuing to write the world of the Iron Fey in The Lost Prince, this time with Ethan, Meghan’s little brother, as the main character. Ethan stole our hearts as the sweet little boy with the brown, curly hair and blue eyes. It broke our hearts every time he would be left behind. Well, Ethan Chase is a baby no more…and his heartache over Meghan has turned into anger.

Having to reconcile little Ethan with the brooding, good-looking guy he turned into was only difficult for merely a moment. And even though he outwardly displays this persona, one of a tough, brooding loner, I could immediately tell that his heart was still the same: big and golden. It gets really difficult for him to keep up that disinterested façade when Mackenzie, or Kenzie for short, strolls into his life. Kenzie has got to be one of the easiest characters to like. Her personality is easy and friendly, and she is quick-witted, which is an attribute I love in my heroines.

The quest that Ethan is thrust into is not something he ever wanted to deal with. Having to rescue a friend from the Fey he hates, and having to accept their help in the process, was the last thing he ever imagined doing. But our Ethan has a heart of gold and would not let this go without a fight. And here is where things start to get really adventurous…in the Nevernever.

I was most excited to see how the Nevernever had changed since we last saw it in The Iron Knight. Julie Kagawa paints such a pretty picture of the progressive Iron Kingdom! The rest of the Nevernever is as it always was. And if we see the Iron Kingdom it means we see the Iron Court, right? YES! We pretty much see all our favorite and some not-so-favorite characters in this book. But the best surprise is the inclusion of a new character, one with silver hair that appears in The Iron Knight not as a real character…yet. I was not expecting this character to be in this series..had not even considered it! I think I was more excited to have him in this series than I am of Ethan! I won’t say the name, but if you know who I mean just vaguely tell me in the comments so we don’t ruin the surprise for others. :)

Overall, The Lost Prince has all the elements of adventure that I loved from the Iron Fey series. The only thing I felt was missing was that epic love story element…at least from Ethan, because we kind of do get it from our new character. It kind of made me hope that we maybe get a book from his point-of-view. Maybe? Hopefully? Pretty please, Julie!! :D In any case, Iron Fey fans will not be disappointed with this new spin-off.

Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

About Julie Kagawa

Julie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.

I had lots of feels, Jess.

And yes the surprise new person was excellent!

I thought there were the buds of a romance with Ethan and Mackenzie. Starting off slow (and possibly doomed?) but I loved it all the same.

I was worried about this one as I LOVED the Iron Fey series so so so so so much…and then it was like slipping back into my most favorite pair of sweatpants. PERFECTION.

FEELINGS!!! Yup. Right there with you.

I agree about the budding romance. I see many things happening in the future for them! :D

I loved that it didn’t feel like we missed a beat between the Iron Fey series and this one. Very smooth and seamless transition.

I’m looking forward to the same depth of story line and character action. Well written stories that draw me in so deeply that if I close my eyes I become a witness to the action.

I’m having a hard time thinking of Ethan as a young adult, even with the cover image. Hopefully the book can convince me!

I thought I would have a hard time myself, but Julie does a great job at making us put that image aside and enjoying this version of Ethan. :)

It’s always interesting to see how an author handles a spin off – sometimes they work really well and other times, not so much, but I have high hopes :).

    Thanks for having the giveaway!

Oh goodness, I’ve been so apprehensive about this book because of my DIE HARD love for Iron Fey and everything Nevernever. Like a child and a favorite toy is me with this series, it is true. I have turned on my Kindle, looked at this title, gotten big-eyed, and clicked away quickly SO MANY TIMES. This is the first blog post I’ve even read on it.

In reading some of these comments from readers, the transition seems not too bumpy. I have been worried that it wouldn’t move well from the original Iron Fey to this spinoff, but I will try to stop with the worrying and get on with the reading. (Also I’m a little put-off by this cover in terms of the story, although it is very pretty on the eyes outside of the story. If that makes sense at all.)

I’m babbling. Great review, Jess. As always. I will be brave and read this one soon!

The cover looks captivating by itself and I read the Iron Legacies… That was just “I NEED THE LOST PRINCE ASAP!!!!”
I really wonder what happened to our favorite Ash and Meghan??
I can’t wait to see how their possible child looks like!!
    How will Ethan meet him!?!?!
I can’t contain my EXCITEMENT!! AHHH!!!

I was expecting the mystery character…The Iron Prophesy book tipped me off. I loved heading back into the never never. Liked seeing Ethan as the broody guy, the interaction between Ethan and Mystery Guy, But I wasn’t in love with Kenzie at first…thought she was a little pushy. But enjoyed that she was so human in the Never Never.

It seems like Julie Kagawa knew just what to do to keep us Iron Fey fans happy! I missed the romance though to but I have high hopes for Ethan and his lady friend ;)

And I was surprised by a certain character too! But I loved him!
