Review: This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

Book Reviews

4.5 Stars

Ok, so the very cool thing about This Song Will Save Your Life is that it really speaks the truth on so many things and that it’s such an easy book to relate to. Even if you aren’t or weren’t like Elise in high school, you’re sure to take something away from this story. My takeaway is, always believe in your potential for greatness and stay at it, no matter what the haters have to say because one day all the pieces will fall into place and you will find that happy place in your life.

This book really struck a chord with me because it made me think of my own daughter, who at almost 12 now has always been such an individual. I always worry about her being hurt by others because of her individuality, because you know kids travel in packs, but this book put me at ease that she will be ok in the end, and that all I can do is be supportive in all she loves to do.

I wasn’t expecting this book to open up the way it did, but it made such an impact and it really made me instantly care for Elise. I wanted to hug her and be her friend. I really felt so sad for this lonely girl. I really loved how supportive her parents were, once they knew what was going on of course. Her new friend Vicki was fabulous in that way that truly honest friends are, the ones that tell you the truth no matter what but yet are still kind about it. I loved that. And Char…oh, Char. I had a bad feeling about that situation from the get-go, and yet I still kind of got swept up in his charm and mystery as Elise did. I was glad to see the spell broken and getting to see him “in the light of day” really helped, because DAMN that boy was bad news. This book really wasn’t about their relationship though, but it did help Elise realize a lot of things about herself and what she really wanted from her life. Now if only Pippa could get a clue… *sighs*

And the music!! I LOVED all the music talk in this book! I was lucky (and grateful) to have received a CD of the playlist for this book, but it also made me want to make my own and add ALL the songs mentioned in this book. Such a great variety of awesomeness.

This is definitely one book I will be recommending to everyone. Now, I’m off to have a dance party in my room. :)

Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.

Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.

The song I can’t stop listening to at the moment is “Be Still” by The Killers. I just love it so much.
    The meaning behind it.

    “Be still
    Wild and young
    Long may your innocence reign
    Like shells on the shore
And may your limits be unknown
And may your efforts be your own
If you ever feel you can’t take it anymore

    Don’t break character
You’ve got a lot of heart
Is this real or just a dream?
    Rise up like the sun
Labor till the work is done”

My favorite song changes on a day to day basis, but I can never get tired of the theme songs for Harry Potter and BBC’s Sherlock.

As you know, I was also a huge fan of this book too. I keep plotting who I can buy it for as a gift. haha. Love your perspective as a mom. I worry this is something I will worry (ha) about when I have my own kids. I mean, you can only protect them so much and that is terrifying. Ah. It makes me all kinds of nervous. I’m sure your gal is going to come into her own because she has a great mom like you.

Do you think you’ll have her read this one?

I loved this one, too! You make an excellent point about it telling the truth. I really think the honesty is one of the things I appreciated most about this book.

Tee hee, have fun at your dance party!

At the moment my current favourite song is Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford and Sons. Something about that song really gets to me and I often listen to it before going to sleep at night.

I loved This Song Will Save Your Life and I’m glad you did too!

One of my favorite songs right now is Scream For Silence by Children of Bodom.
Thanks for the chance to win!
