Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

5 Stars

(This totally contains spoilers to Shatter Me. You’ve been warned.)

Where to even begin?!

Unravel Me was the type of sequel that we hope for in every series. It’s exciting, it’s captivating, it’s all-encompassing. It takes you in from the first few words and doesn’t let you go until the very last page.

I’m not sure what I was expecting from Juliette in Unravel Me, but she stayed true to herself, if maybe a little down on herself, all the while still learning more and more about herself and her abilities. I was glad she didn’t all of a sudden turn into a kick-ass machine though. She makes such believable progress in a really well-paced manner. Her development didn’t feel rushed and it still left room for even more discoveries in the future. I must admit that the ability I want her to develop most right now is the one where she learns to turn off her Energy at will…obviously for selfish reasons having to do with a certain boy in this book. It just MUST happen!

Speaking of boys…in Shatter Me, I unquestionably fell in love with Adam, and Warner intrigued me, oh, so much. After reading Unravel Me, I’m finding it hard to keep my heart out of Warner’s grip. He is such a surprise in this book. He floored me. He was open and raw and intense and tender…he certainly is too much, and he won’t let you not see him as a contender for Juliette’s heart. But, with all that said…I’m still in love with my first love, Adam. I find it incredible that Tahereh has created these two guys so opposite, yet with so much in common, that she made it impossible to find a definite side for me to be on. I think I will take whatever happens in book 3 in stride though.

I can’t write this review without mentioning the awesomeness that is Kenji. He really shines in this book. We get to know him so much better and in the process he stole my heart. He becomes one of Juliette’s closest friend, which was really interesting. Kenji somehow was able to be the voice of the reader in this book. The things we sometimes want to scream at the characters because they can’t get over themselves, or their being idiots…Kenji voiced all those things for us. Whether it was at a moment where too much mushiness was happening or when we just wanted to shake Juliette. So, thank you, Kenji…and Tahereh. :)

Maybe the biggest shock and twist in this book comes with the appearance of Supreme Commander Anderson, also known as Warner’s father. He really is a horrendous character. While in Warner as a villain I was able to glimpse at moments of humanity, enough to feel some empathy for him, in Anderson, there’s just evil. There’s nothing redeemable in him. He’s detestable. Yuck. And, hey, look! We have a clear villain now!

I was happy to see the other gifted characters come into play. I loved learning about everyone and what they could do. I am worried that they won’t be able to fight off The Reestablishment though. While I want it to be like a huge X-Men battle, I think it’s really going to come down to Juliette. The anticipation for the final book in this series might kill me…but I hope not, because I really would rather be alive to read it. :D

tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it’s almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She’s finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam’s life.

What Some Friends Had to Say About It…

Asheley @ Into the Hall of Books – “This second book was no disappointment to me. I have no idea where Tahereh Mafi is going to go from here.” – Same and me either!

lisa @ lisa is busy nerding – “Basically if you thought Shatter Me was rad, you’ll be all about Unravel Me and jonesing for the next book which totally isn’t coming soon enough for my liking.” – Agree!!

Lauren @ Love is not a triangle – “After reading Unravel Me, I am still Team Adam. However, I am unsurprised that people have fallen for Warner, and I don’t blame them for it. (Much.)” – LOVE IT!

About Tahereh Mafi

Tahereh Mafi is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the SHATTER ME series. She was born in a small city somewhere in Connecticut and currently resides in Santa Monica, California, where she drinks too much caffeine and finds the weather to be just a little too perfect for her taste. When unable to find a book, she can be found reading candy wrappers, coupons, and old receipts. SHATTER ME is her first novel.

I agree with so much of this! I’m in Warner’s grip, too, though I’m totally Team Adam. So many things in this book–and those last chapters? WOW. The wait for the still unnamed book three will probably kill me.

As if I wasn’t already in love with the x-men elements of this series and WARNER OBVIOUSLY, you call it out perfectly: “I can’t write this review without mentioning the awesomeness that is Kenji”

YES. He’s like a comic relief who keeps J grounded yet takes his job totally serious. I love his unusual balance so very much.

    YAY TEAM ADAM! *fist bump*

I think my favorite things about this book are the following:

    (1) Seeing more of Kenji and getting to know him better. He’s a great character (and I want him to have a novella), and I think he was the perfect “foil” in many situations. He was just too intriguing.

    (2) Learning more about Warner to the point where I can kind of understand why he is who he is. It was VERY hard to resist him, truly, but in the end, I’m still stuck on the terrible things he’s done. I do like him so much more now though!

Oh boy. I love what you say about Juliette. You’re so right – it’s good that she didn’t turn into a machine super-quickly. I’m ready and waiting for it, though, and I think it’s coming. Book Three, badass Juliette.

Also, MAN WARNER. I just don’t know. You know I went right back to Shatter Me as soon as I finished this book because I was so disturbed with myself for my flailing loyalties, right? Then I found myself in Team Adam again, but now I’m worried that when I *listen* to Unravel Me, will I waver again?? (Cause you know I listened to Shatter Me? So good.)

I just met T Mafi at Pitch Dark, definitely a high point in my bookish life. It was THRILLING to be able to give her the GLARE OF ALL GLARES and tell her ALL THE THOUGHTS I have about making my loyalties shift. Seriously, this is one of the best ‘second books’ out there, and I’m having a fit for the third book. I know I say that a lot, but I really truly am. Such an excellent series.

I don’t hate Warner as much as I did, but..I don’t really feel much for him. This whole Juliette love felt kind of sudden for him. Or maybe that’s just me.

Here is hoping that Juliette ends up with Adam. Her home. They have history. Love. Forbidden love. They are the heart of one another. He makes her believe she isn’t a monster. and HELLO. He has the bird tattooed on his chest that she has been dreaming about.

COME ON. Let these two love birds end up together.

I totally agree! At the end of Shatter Me I found myself woven into Adam’s heart. Thought Warner was equally intriguing. TEAM ADAM!!! Sadly, as I finished reading Unravel Me, Warner’s grip intensified :( so from now on : TEAM WARNER!!!!!!!!!!!!
