Musical Stories | Book-to-Movie Adaptations Nervousness

This week on Gone with the Words:
Tune in Tuesday: Transatlanticism
Review: The Springsweet by Saundra Mitchell

TGIF is a weekly feature created and hosted by GReads! that re-caps the week’s posts and has different question each week.

This week’s question: Musical Stories: If you could read a book about any song, which song would you love to see written down in story form?

Ok, so while this Texas girl can enjoy herself some country music, it’s really not my usual style, but my pick is a country song. In fact, I bet I’m surprising some people with this pick.

I wanted to choose this song because I want to see this wonderful summer love in full, glorious detail. I want to hear about the conversations these two had, and the experiences they had together. I want to read about the farm and the river and the drives. The only thing I would change is the ending. I don’t want them to loose touch and that’s it!! I want to read about how they lost touch for a while, but after going back one summer wanting to reminisce about that first love, they found each other again, realizing that there’s no one else in this world they’d rather be with, and that their love was the lasting kind, not just the first love kind.

This song always makes me reminisce about holiday trips to my grandparent’s place in Mexico, where I experienced my first serious crush. I’d live for those trips when we’d get to see each other again! *sigh* But, anyway…here’s the song:

Follow Friday

Follow My Book Blog Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read where we all get together and say HI!

This week’s question: What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaption of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

I’m really nervous about a couple of books…

1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower – This movie is already made and now we play the waiting game for its release. The screenplay is actually written by the author, so it might not be too bad. I’m mostly worried that it won’t have the same impact as the book.

2. The Sky is Everywhere – Selena Gomez as Lennie?! I’m dreading this, if it ever in fact happens.

3. Thirteen Reasons Why – Again, another adaptation that had Selena Gomez attached. I just worry that she doesn’t have the depth for these roles, ok! Nothing personal, lol. Miley Cyrus would be worse.

Love the name “Strawberry Wine”! Ahh I’m so nervous about The Sky Is Everywhere too because it’s so good and I recently read Thirteen Reasons Why. Weird that Selena is attached to THAT too! I like her but I worry she doesn’t really have the depth too. Hopefully if they’re made, she will surprise us! I’m excited for Perks because I like Logan Lerman and Emma Watson, ha. Great answers! :)

I completely agree with Perks of being a Wallflower. I really hope they don’t ruin the book. I’m a new follower :)

I definitely agree with you about Selena Gomez. I’m starting to wonder what’s going on inside people’s head when they look at these books and these characters and start assigning random celebrities that are the “supposed new now” thing to portray them. Are they just not reading the books or understanding the characters?!

Great answer by the way, always enjoy your blog and your thoughts.

I agree with all 3 books you’ve chosen.
Well, I’m a bit nervous for Perks but I have a crush on Logan Lerman and I like Emma Watson too! :D
But, I don’t like Gomez being attached to 13 reasons why and The Sky is Everywhere. I just don’t think she can pull off those kind of characters at all.

I read the script for Perks of Being A Wallflower, but I have not read the book.  The script was powerful… I was SOBBING at my work desk.  Can’t wait to see it and I’m going to read the book first.

I don’t see Selena Gomez as either of those characters. Could be /hope I’m wrong but not seeing it.

That’s a great question about turning a song into a book. I have to think about that one a little while.

I think I’m going to be keeping this on repeat today :) I’ll admit it, I love country music! It usually puts me in a great mood. This would make a PERFECT book! An author needs to get on this!

JESS!! oh my god I am loving your song choice.  I actually have my own story for this one… when this song came out (I think I was in 9th or 10th grade) I had spent a few days at the beach with my family & I met this boy who was staying at a beach house a few doors down. It was totally a summertime romance! and this song will ALWAYS remind me of that.  I love it so.  Unfortunately we did lose touch :(

I agree with Perks. I would be nervous. I love both Logan Lerman and Emma Watson, but if the true feeling of the book isn’t there, then it will just be awful.

OMG! Strawberry Wine as a book?? Yes please!! Sign me up!! *lol*  (I haven’t even thought of that song in ages…)

Selena Gomez in Thirteen Reasons Why?? UGH! I like her (Wizards is popular in our house…) but I can’t really imagine her in that role.

Urgh, Selena Gomez? I have only seen her once and didn’t like it, so maybe she’s actually super-cool (read: talented).. but I really doubt it.

Strawberry Wine! Oh my goodness! How did this one not come to my mind? Well, I guess it is because it has been several years since I heard this song. It totally has great potential to be a Contemporary YA novel. It would make such a perfect romantic scene with young love. :)

Strawberry Wine!  I love this song…one of my go-to karaoke songs though I never do it justice.  I am nervous about The Perks of Being a Wallflower as well.  I just loved that book so much that I am afraid of what will happen to me if it is bad.

yeahh. I hate that my two fav books will feature a actress that most likely will F these roles up. On another note, it’s so cute how that song reminds you of your first crush.

PS: I love Robb Stark too! Isn’t he just freaking gorgeous. *swoons*
