Top Five Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

Other Bookish Posts

Picking up a book for me is such a personal thing. I’m a big mood reader but I also know by now what I’m pretty sure I’ll like and what I know I won’t like. This week I wasn’t able to come up with ten things but here’s my five…

Interesting Cover

I know! I know! We’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I do it. I admit it. A good cover will always sell me even if its something I don’t usually read.

Hype Machine

If everyone I know or follow is reading a book and LOVING it, I will jump on that. It’s really hard to ignore everyone’s enthusiasm.

Friend Recommendation

My friends have great taste in books so if one of them recommends me one directly, I will get it.

Previously Read Author

If an author I’ve read publishes a book, I will pick it up. Especially if I loved their previous ones. It’s a trust thing.

Intriguing Synopsis

Although I judge books by their covers, if it’s one in a genre I don’t usually read, I will read the synopsis. I don’t read them for other books, like romance, but I do for most all others.

Now, tell me what makes you pick up a book?

Great list! I think the whole ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ thing is ideal for people, but not for books. If covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t put effort into making them pretty so I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be drawn to them! Besides certain genres tend to have certain covers, so covers are another great way to decide whether or not a book is for you.
